TAZAUNGDAING LIGHTS FESTIVAL

We would like to inform another festival of lights similar to that of Thadingyut is usually held on the full moon day of Tazaungmone in November for three days all over Myanmar. It will fall on 12th November in this year. Houses, office, shops and streets are decorated with electric lights and total of 9999 candles are ceremoniously lit at the pagodas.
Tazaungmone is that of offering a special kind of robe to monks. The robes are accompanied by other requisites for monasteries. One unique offering is currency notes of various denominations and pa-de-tha tree is back, hung with things like packets of yellow robes and other requisites, like a Christmas tree. Long processions of devotees carry the beautifully decorated offerings to the monastery concerned.
One ancient custom of the festival is eating mezali bud salad on the full-moon night in the belief that it will ward off diseases.
The night after the full moon day is fanciful for the young men! They remove shop-signs, pieces of furniture and other movables from shops and homes in the small hours of the full-moon night and leave them at a distance. The young practical-jokers have great fun watching the owners hurry about in the morning looking for their missing things.

Shwezigon Pagoda Festival

Shwezigone pagoda festival is held in Tazaungmone, the eighth month in Myanmar calendar, which falls in October/November of each year depending on Lunar Calendar. It will start from 3rd November in this year 2008.
The villagers from nearby villages come by bullock-carts, some come by bamboo rafts or sailing boats especially the pottery people from the north sails down the Ayeyarwaddy with their all sizes of clay pots to sell in the festival. People who comes to the festival pay homage to the pagoda, enjoy the trading, see the show, learn about the people from the different part of their little world, then go back home refreshed and relaxed in anticipation of the coming plough season.
It lasts for 23 days during which one can find food stalls, fun-fairs, shops selling local products, dance/ drama/ theatrical shows, magic shows, puppet shows, and so on.
The locals as well as the foreign visitors enjoy walking round the food stalls and other shops, buying souvenirs and studying the environment.

Generally tourist season of Myanmar is from October to March according to the climatic condition. These 6 months are completely free from rain and temperature is rather low if compare to other months.

 Kyaikkami Yele Pagoda Festival

We would like to inform another one of Myanmar Festivals. The Kyaikkami Yele Pagoda Festival will be held as a first festival of Mon State in peak season including offer 9,000 candles lighting to Buddha and fanfare from 13th October to 19th October this year.
Kyaikkami that located 9km northeast of Thanphyuzayat in Mon State was a small coastal resort and missionary center known as Amherst during the British era.
It is also famous one of Myanmar religious festivals. During the festival, variety of commodities including native products such as dried fish, seaweed, decorative necklace of sea mollusk, water melon, ice potato, sweet potato are available.
Stage-show and other entertainment such as Myanmar traditional drama, football match, Myanmar boxing, cane ball match will be included.
So if you have a plan to visit to Myanmar in October, you can enjoy the Kyaikkami Yele Pagoda Festival and also can visit to Setse Beach and War Cemetery of Thanphuzayat after festival.
 

padonma Lotus Robe

Since Myanmar is the Buddhist country, Myanmar people do meritorious deeds such as offering alms, water, flowers, and candles to Buddha, food to the monks and free animals. And also offering various kinds of sacred robes to the Pagodas, Buddha Images and members of the Sangha have been upheld. Among various kinds of sacred robes, Padonma lotus robe from lotus fiber is regarded as sacred.
And this kind of sacred robes can only be found of Inlay Lake because Padonma lotus can only be grown in Inlay Lake. After getting the Padonma Lotus Stalks form the Lake, these stalks are cut into pieces and from these stalks, fiber can get. These fibers are rolled into a tiny thread. This thread can be rolled into handlooms. The lotus stalks are plucked and then washed. Later it soaked again in rice congealed and dried. The dried yarn is again spun and then it is made ready for finally weaving into a rope.
Weaving a Padonma lotus robe is very time consuming and it has to work laboriously so it’s no doubt its very expensive. The quality of this Padonma lotus is light, fragrant and suitable for all seasons.
 

Thadingyut Lights Festival

It is close to reach the Thadingyut lights Festival. It is usually held in October and this year it will fall on 13th October to 15th October. Thandingyut is seven-month of Myanmar calendar and the end of lent. It is one of religious festivals and also a time for family reunions and paying respects to teachers and elderly relations.
Thadingyut Festival celebrates the return of the Buddha to earth from the abode of gods, where He had been preaching an especially profound section of His Doctrine for an entire Lent. Buddhists lighted up His way with candles, oil-lamps and torches. The Thadingyut Festival marks that event.
During this festival, all the streets and houses in large cities and all houses in small towns and villages are beautifully lit up with multi-coloured lights on the nights of the festival and the days are filled with a flurry of special religious activities. And also parents, teachers and relative elders are offered with gifts, food and drinks by the youths.
