Buddhist Lent Period (30 June, 2009)

Buddhist Lent period commence from full moon day of Waso, 6th July until full moon day of Thadingyut, 3rd October in Gregorian calendar. During these three months, Buddhist monks are forbidden to travel overnight from their monastery. If they must go, they can go for short distances but must be back to their monastery the same evening. Buddhist devotees observe Sabbath on every Sabbath days which falls on every week.
On that Sabbath day, the persons who observing usually goes to the monastery or Dhamma Hall to receive nine precepts from the monks and has to have the lunch before twelve and then fasting until dawn at the next day. And also has to say prayers, telling beats or practice meditation. On that particular Sabbath day Buddhist devotees usually invite the group of monks to their places and offer alms at dawn.
If you visit during above mentioned lent period, you can study the religious ceremony on every Sabbath day.

Full Moon Day of Waso (19 June, 2009)

We would like to give information about one of Myanmar holy day, full moon day of Waso which will be fall on 6th July in this year.
During the Buddha’s time, when it was 2550 years ago Buddha preached his first sermon to the five disciples in the forest where deer have given freedom. Then at the present Buddhist people observe Sabbath in this Lent period of three months. Buddhist monks are forbidden to travel overnight from their monastery. It is accustom that during Waso month until the full day of Waso the Buddhist offer the robe to the monks.
In full moon day of Waso, the Buddhist devotees visit to the pagodas doing meritorious deeds such as offering alms, water, flowers, candles and incense to Buddha. And also robes offering ceremony are held at the monasteries and the religious places by inviting monks. At the country side, young people gather and go to nearby a jungle to plug the flowers and then offering to Buddha statues at the village pagodas or monasteries as Waso flowers offering.

Puppets, Nowadays Popular Sale (13 June, 2009)

Before Puppets are famous souvenirs only for foreigners than Natives. Nowadays these are more popular among domestic community according to a weekly journal. The reason, Myanmar purchase Puppets are for home decoration and as gifts by the people who are going to abroad.
Puppets for sale have not complete strings as in professional puppets performing at shows but have enough strings to activate.
Mostly Puppets are made in Mandalay and these are more popular than Yangon made because of their royal style and antique features. Mostly U Shwe Yoe and Flying Horse puppets are made from Yangon with modern features.
Prices vary around K. 3000 depend on design, type and quality of puppets.

Taungpyone Nats or Spirit Festival  (6 June, 2009)

Taungpyone Nat or Spirit Festival is a popular festival usually held during the month of August at Taungpyone village near Mandalay will be fall from 31.07.09 to 05.08.09 in this year. According to tradition, Nats are spirits that can bring luck and prosperity to the worshippers and can also bring danger to those who do not respect them. The Myanmars worship them vigorously for fulfill their wishes, protect from ill-fate and danger, and bring good luck, prosperity and progress. Devotees from all over Myanmar, comes to this special festival and offer their donations and enjoy themselves with the blessings of the spirits every year.

First day of Myanmar State Schools (1 June, 2009)

State schools in Myanmar usually open in 1st of June. On this beginning day all the kids proudly wear the new uniform neat and tidy. Every kid seems show off their new utensils like knapsack, shoes and tiffin box. In Myanmar parents have accustomed to accompany their kids to the schools you can observe the behavior of the Myanmar mothers. The kids look quite nervous to find their friends at that very first day. Shopkeepers have good business by selling snacks, B.B.Q and burger.
This is the usual scene of the Myanmar State Schools in 1st of June every year.
